Stress and illness in the Workplace In a MORI poll research, stress was cited as having a negative effect on the health of over a third of the working population. It is estimated that up to 75% of all illness is stress-related. It is well documented that chronic stress often leads to medical and psychological dis-ease. "Eight out of 10 bosses are feeling more stressed than ever. And what makes it worse is that most think nobody even notices. Employment law firm Peninsulas survey found 84% of bosses were stressed. Stress is one of the biggest barriers to business, but many employers have no choice but to put aside their own problems to deal with running their firm." The Financial Mail on Sunday 27/1/02 The Effects of Stress: ... Substantially reduced efficiency and accuracy of work produced Many millions of working days are lost annually in the UK at a cost estimated to be £8 billion and half of these absences are stress related. Peter Matthews, International Stress Management Association, states that companies would be well advised to have in place a stress management policy and an employee stress management programme or they could find they are faced with a spate of legal claims for stress related conditions, caused by stressful work environments. Unless employers proactively address this NOW they will have a significant problem on their hands. (And quite a financial one at that!) What Can Be Done? Some countries, notable Denmark, have been addressing this problem for a number of years. Their occupational health services have been working closely with employers to provide a flexible approach to the reduction of stress and work related illness. As part of this initiative, some firms now involve complementary health therapists in the maintenance of well being amongst their workforce. Reflexology has proved very popular in this field, and reflexologists are increasingly employed by companies in Denmark, with impressive results. Odense Post Office in Denmark has employed a full time reflexologist since 1990 reported saving around £100,000 a year due to a 13.3% reduction in sickness and absenteeism. Fonss and Hove, Solicitors in Kolding, found that employees receiving treatments showed greater motivation and enhanced working ability. Although UK companies are often slow on the uptake some firms are finally seeing the (holistic) light and are taking on complementary health practitioners.
